This study aims to develop and to demonstrate the effectiveness of a systematic, practical, cost-effective diet-induced weight loss and exercise intervention in both urban and rural communities that can reduce pain and improve other clinical outcomes in knee OA patients. This pragmatic community-based trial will determine if the important benefits realized by participants in our previous trial translate to real-world settings.

The study is being conducted in Forsyth, Haywood, and Johnston Counties. Volunteers will randomly be assigned to one of two groups. One group will attend diet and exercise classes and the other group will attend health education classes that discuss what it truly means to be healthy and how various components of health (physical, mental, and social) interact with each other to impact your overall health. The study will last 18 months.
